In the past 30 – 40 years, the percentage of older Americans reporting chronic knee pain has almost tripled the average rate. And older Americans are not just complaining of knee pain – they’re seeking knee replacement surgery to help remain active. Knee replacements have also been on the rise over the past quarter of a century.

According to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the skyrocketing reports are due to the U.S.’s growing obesity epidemic and a rapidly aging population. Experts also speculate that numbers may be higher now that adults are more likely to admit having pain and seek help.

Are you or a loved one suffering from knee pain or arthritis? Whether you’re trying to overcome a chronic condition or recovering from a knee surgery, the experts at Bon Secours In Motion can help you regain strength, mobility, and range of motion in your knee. older couple golfingDid you know that every extra pound of weight you put on adds 4 to 8 more pounds of stress to your knees and hips, and increases your risk for osteoarthritis? Well, it does! Regular exercise can help you lose the excess weight – and can help protect joints from the damaging effects of arthritis. Getting in motion also reduces your risk by preventing muscle atrophy and producing new, healthy cartilage.

High risk candidates should be careful of how they exercise. Sports-related injuries and other joint injuries can lead to osteoarthritis years down the road. Even young adults and teenagers who suffer injury to any part of their joints may develop osteoarthritis later on. If you’ve experienced a sports injury, talk to a sports specialist or your primary care doctor to learn how you can prevent the spread of arthritis.

Bon Secours In Motion Physical Therapy, massage, manual therapy, physical therapist, manual therapist, massage therapist, sports massage, athletic massage, arthritis rehabilitationMost people have muscle pain from time to time. But myofascial pain is a kind of ongoing or longer-lasting pain that can affect the connective tissue, or fascia, of a group of muscles. With myofascial pain, there are areas called trigger points. Trigger points are usually in fascia or in a tight muscle.

The main symptom of myofascial pain syndrome is ongoing or longer-lasting muscle pain, in areas such as the low back, neck, shoulders, and chest. You might feel the pain or the pain may get worse when you press on a trigger point. The muscle may be swollen or hard—you may hear it called a “taut band” of muscle or “knot” in the muscle. Other symptoms of myofascial pain may include: a muscle that is sensitive or tender when touched, reduced range of motion in the affected area, or a feeling of weakness in the affected muscle.

When there fascia become tightened and painful, myofascial massage can help loosen the fascia and release your muscles and joints from restrictive and often painful positions. Conditions that may respond well to a Myofascial release include, back pain, whiplash, disc problems, postural irregularities, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, frozen shoulder, and arthritis.

Is there a consultation process?
Yes.  If you have a computer, you can contact us on our website prior to your first appointment to gain specific information about your meeting. During your first appointment, your physical therapist will conduct a physical exam and talk to you about your medical history, including your aches and pains, allergies etc.  We will chat about all your potential treatment options. If you are a candidate for myofascial release, your therapist will help you fully understand the myofascial massage treatment and establish any areas that will require additional treatment.  Together you will decide on a treatment plan.

What will happen during the treatment?
Make yourself comfortable. During a massage your body releases toxins. This process can mean that your body temperature can change at any time, so please do say if you become cold. If your therapist wants you to adjust your position, he or she will either move you or will ask you to move as necessary. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It’s up to you. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.

Sounds great! Under what circumstances am I not eligible for a myofascial  massage?
There are a few conditions that are not suitable for treatment with myofascial massage. If you are currently undergoing cancer treatment, have open wounds, have had a recent fracture or severe osteoporosis, have hypermobile joints, suffer from acute circulatory conditions, are undergoing anti-coagulant therapy, have advanced diabetes, or another unsuitable condition this treatment is not recommended. However, there may be plenty of other therapies we can recommend that would help improve your condition.

How will I feel after a myofascial massage?
You may feel tired or relaxed after your myofascial massage, however, most people experience an immediate feeling of relief.  Aches and pains are common for for around 24 hours after your treatment as the body flushes the toxins that have been released out.  In order to speed this process along, drink lots of water after your massage.

If you have any questions about this treatment, do not hesitate to talk with your therapist. You should always consult with your primary care physician before starting a new treatment regimen.

Aaron Eppler is our Sports Performance Coordinator at our very busy and very popular Greenbrier location-located within the Chilled Ponds Arenas. To schedule with Aaron-call the training facility at 391-7676.

How long have you worked at IM?
Around 13 months!

What is your role and what are your credentials?
I am the Sports Performance Coordinator at In Motion Physical Therapy and Sports Performance at Chilled Ponds in Chesapeake, VA.  I have my Master’s of Education Degree in Health and Kinesiology; I am a Certified Athletic Trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Where did you go to school? Do you have any specialties?
I graduated with my Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, AR in 2005 and graduated with my Master’s of Education degree from the University of Texas at Tyler in Tyler, TX.  I really like to work with overhead throwing athletes (baseball, softball, volleyball).  Over my career and education, I have learned about the importance of strengthening the scapula supporting muscles to help prevent or reduce injuries. I also focus performing sports specific exercises with each sport using body weight exercises, medicine balls, Keiser Triple Trainer, Gymstick, free weights, ladders, hurdles, and other equipment.

Do you currently play any sports or how do you stay in shape?

I do like to run outside.  I have always liked running, it is a great way to get outside, is a great stress reliever, and really clears your head.  I am currently about to begin training for the Shamrock ½ Marathon, which occurs in March.  This will be my first ½ marathon, so I am anxious to get in the groove and achieve one of my life goals.

Do you have any interesting hobbies, talents, accomplishments?
I wish I could say I can sing, but I am horrible.  I did play the alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone for about 6 years until I was about 17.  I do like to play some Ladder Ball…just give me a location and time, and I will take you on!  I feel that being a husband and father of a 2 year old is my greatest accomplishment.  It is amazing to me that I was able to find a beautiful wife and have an awesome 2 year old son to live with and come home to everyday.

What is your favorite thing about working at IM?
I could not ask for a better support staff here at Chilled Ponds and at our other In Motion sites!  One of the highlights of my day, other than being with my wife and 2 year old son, is coming to work at Chilled Ponds.  We are like a close knit family and there is never a dull moment.

What is something about you that might surprise your colleagues?
I used to have hair!  Yes, believe it or not, I did have a nice “do” at one point!  I just got the gene for baldness in the gene pool, but I like it… except for sunburns. No bueno!

Do you have any pets?
I do not have any pets.  We had our family dog pass away last January, and I think we will wait until our son is a little older before we get a new one.  It’s definitely in the future though.

What is the last book that you read?

I like to read intelligent books like Larry the Cable Guy’s book “Get R’ Done”, which I have read twice…it’s hilarious!  Anyways, I believe I read Client-Centered Exercise Prescription about a month ago.

We all try to be healthy, but if you could pick one indulgence what would it be?
I could mow through some Dark Chocolate Peanut M&M’s, but I cannot eat them due to my son having a severe peanut/tree nut allergy.  Having him healthy is the key, so it is a no-brainer to forfeit the delectable M&M’s.

Thanks Aaron-very interesting-things I never knew! Want to schedule an appointment with Aaron? Call us at 391-7676!

I need to make a confession.

I cheated on Zumba.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Zumba for all the pounds I’ve lost while dancing and doing lunges. But as most fitness instructors will tell you, you shouldn’t  limit yourself to one kind of exercise. That’s how people become injured, get bored and hit weight-loss plateaus.

Today I found myself in a class called “step and tone.” At the gym where I teach, it’s lovingly dubbed “step and torture” for all the sore muscles you feel the next day.

Normally, I dread these types of repetitive classes. Perhaps you can relate. I like to hide in the back where no one can see my short legs get tangled up trying to hop over the bench. It’s embarrassing.

But not today.

Here’s my secret: I went with a group of crazy friends.

Our goal? Laugh, smile and walk out of class with a sweat-drenched T-shirt.

It’s very simple. Having fun while you were work out keeps you motivated.

Friends will make you laugh when you can’t seem to follow the instructor. Friends will encourage you to keep going just at the point where you want to stop. And friends will help you forget that exercising takes some effort and commitment.

See, it’s really not torture at all.

Stockings aren’t the only things getting stuffed this Christmas! Health experts says that the average American consumes a staggering 6,000 calories on Christmas – and an extra 500 for every day leading up to the holidays.

It’s not surprising that many find it difficult to stick to a healthy (or even  moderately unhealthy!) eating plan during the month of December. With temptation seemingly around every corner during the holiday season and colder, darker evenings, it is harder to maintain an exercise routine or healthy habits.

But winter doesn’t have to be synonymous with weight gain, and you don’t have to wait until the new year to resolve to get back in shape! At Bon Secours In Motion, our nutrition and weight loss experts offers a wide range of tailored weight loss and weight management services designed to help you lose the weight for good. Our three pillars of fitness are healthy eating, physical activity, and motivational support to help you change your behaviors.

The Bon Secours Weight Loss Institute is easy to enroll in and will tailor your weight loss service to fit with your level of fitness, lifestyle, and weight loss goals. Find out which program is right for you!

Bon Secours In Motion Physical Therapy and Sports Performance, runningWhat would you do if your husband or wife gave you a nice pair of running shoes for Christmas?

Would you be offended? Would you take it as an unpleasant hint that you need to lose a few pounds?

Or maybe you’d grab those running shoes, shove them on your feet and lace them up perfectly to see how they fit.

I’m hoping you would do the latter. I know I hope to be.

I have never been a runner. I’ve never understood how people can run outside for an hour and be happy about it. Just thinking about running on the treadmill makes me wince.

I am the perfect example of someone who loves group exercise. I like talking to people, socializing as I sweat and making new friends in the process. I’m a group exercise instructor, go figure.

Yet, I did the unthinkable this year. I asked my husband to buy me some running shoes.

I didn’t ask for black leather boots or a cashmere sweater. I asked for sneakers.

Hear me out on this one.

I don’t plan on running every other day in the morning when it’s so dark you have to wear reflective tape. I’m not going to enter any half marathons either.

But sometimes I wish I didn’t have to drive over to the gym at a certain time of day, with or without the kids, to get my workout. Sometimes, I just want to walk out my door and start my exercise. And I know from my experience teaching fitness that proper footwear is important.

And that’s why I put a pair of Asics – hint, hint – on my Christmas list this year.

Come Christmas morning, that might just be me you see running around the neighborhood.

I’ll be sure to smile and wave.

My entire house smells like Christmas cookies.

Downstairs, my husband is cutting out snowmen, angels and Christmas trees for our children to decorate.

I’m upstairs contemplating the buttery yumminess.

You see, it’s hard to eat just one. Perhaps you can relate.

So I’m hiding with my laptop, trying to ignore the delicious aroma of freshly baked cookies.

Here’s my strategy: I’m going to eat a cookie. Not five cookies. Just one.

I can do this.

Like so many people, I have to consciously decide what I eat and what I don’t. If I ate whatever I wanted, I’d easily gain 10 pounds this holiday season. Who needs that?

For the most part, I stick to my healthy eating habits around the holidays. I make sure my pantry and fridge are stocked with healthy choices that I like so I don’t give in to eating all the goodies that make their way into my house.

At the same time, I don’t believe in completely denying myself a little holiday treat.

So I’m going to have a cookie.

And it will be delicious.
