Strain Counterstrain

strain_counterstrain

Strain counterstrain is a passive positional procedure that places the body in a position of greatest comfort, thereby relieving pain and dysfunction by reduction and arrest of inappropriate proprioceptor activity that maintains somatic dysfunction.

In other words, strain counterstrain allows the therapist to shut off abnormal nerve impulses coming from sensory nerve structures in the region of the body that hurts. By placing the patient in a specific position the abnormal nerve impulses are shut down and holding the patient for 90 seconds commonly shuts down the impulses permanently.
