Women Shouldn't Wait to Weight Train

For men or women, weight training is beneficial. However, many women forgo strength training for cardio based exercise. This is a mistake because the numerous benefits of strength training are particularly important to women’s health as they age,  including:

  • Increased metabolism
  • Improved bone density
  • Better posture
  • Stronger balance and coordination

Weight lifting may also prevent injuries from accidents such as falling.

For those who are unfamiliar with the world of weight training, it may be a good idea to work with a professional, even for just a few sessions, to make sure you understand the equipment and exercises. If you can afford one, a personal trainer can be a great resource and can help you customize a few programs to target the areas you want to strengthen.

If you have a gym membership, the weight machines are a great introduction to the world of strength training. If possible, ask for instruction from a gym administrator or trainer. Once you are accustomed to weight training on the machines, you’ll be able to progress to light, free weights and eventually cable weights.
