I’ve been strength training with the athletic trainers at the Virginia Beach, Healthy Way location for over six months now. Since I’ve started I have noticed a huge improvement in my strength – even from just a few months ago.
I’m an avid gardener. This year I’ve noticed a huge difference in my strength and comfort in the garden. Digging holes for my plants and weeding used to be a challenge for me and a strain on my body. Now the process is much easier. I move the dirt with ease!
The athletic trainers employed by In Motion are just the best. My individual program and focused training and support from my trainer helps to keep me moving forward without injuries or doubt. I can’t recommend the personal training sessions highly enough! – Marie Biggers-Gray
The Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View, which is home to our Harbour View In Motion clinic, has been selected for the 2011 “Best of Suffolk” Award in the Medical / Hospitals category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA). This award recognizes outstanding, local businesses that have served as a positive image of small business in their communities.
Joseph M. Oddis, CEO, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center says, “Since its opening in 1999, Bon Secours Harbour View has been consistently focused on ensuring that programs and services are providing our patients and their families with a high quality care experience. This award is another affirmation that our team is not only meeting; but exceeding those expectations.”
Robert Brown may be young, but he’s a determined and motivated athlete. When his parents saw his drive on the field, they signed him up for additional specialized football training with In Motion.
After visiting Wyle Maddox at the Bon Secours Health Center at Virginia Beach, Robert and his father, Priest Brown, say they can already see a difference in his speed, agility, running, breathing form, and position performance. “This [training] is the foundation,” Mr. Brown says, “it all starts right here.”
The Browns don’t have any plans to stop training with In Motion. From the facility, to the staff members doing the scheduling behind the desk, Mr. Brown says that In Motion is easy to work with, and, at the end of the day, “20 or 30 dollars a week is a small investment in your child’s future!”
When I learned of my problem, a prolapsed rectum, I knew I did not want surgery. After only two visits with Bon Secours In Motion, the exercise program helped me control my colon falling and the pain was less. I am hoping for things to get even better with their professional direction and care.
When it comes to the care provided by In Motion, I felt as if everyone really cared. Staff was not just friendly and polite – they were concerned with making my condition easier. They really listened carefully. Rachel, my therapist, helped me feel at east and not ashamed. – Martha Supik
Michael French completed his first major running event – Virginia Beach’s Shamrock Marathon—on March 20, 2011 after less than one year of training!
“The winds were high, which made it more difficult,” Michael wrote in an email, “but I finished the 26.2 miles in 5 hours and 25 minutes. I am now part of the 1 percent of Americans who have run a marathon!” Michael is equally proud of wife Lynda who not only ran the race but also beat his time by 19 minutes, an experience, he says, “keeps me humble.”
Baseball, softball, and basketball were activities that Michael enjoyed growing up. Like many adults, he gravitated away from playing organized sports. “I wasn’t in bad shape,” says Michael, “but I wanted to find something I could do on a routine basis and get in better shape.” Meanwhile, Lynda had taken up running and was enjoying it. Recognizing that this was a sport they could do together, Michael started running. It was April 2010, just six months after his 50th birthday. By September, Michael completed his first running event, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach (13.1 miles).
As people of faith, Michael and Lynda have been inspired by a particular passage from the Bible – Corinthians 6:19-20. “We believe our bodies are ‘temples of the Holy Spirit,’” says Michael; “we need to honor God by taking care of our bodies.”
Like other athletes, runners experience injuries, so when muscle pulls started to slow him down, Michael turned to Bon Secours In Motion Physical Therapy-Virginia Beach. A running analysis determined his specific weaknesses, and physical therapist Sue Parks designed an exercise program for him to stretch and strengthen particular areas to prevent injuries. In addition, a dietary analysis nudged Michael toward eating more nutritious lunches and “marathon” foods. “My diet wasn’t bad,” he says, “but I learned, for instance, the importance of eating protein for muscle recovery within 45 minutes of running a long-distance race.”
Married 27 years, Michael and Lynda truly enjoy running with church members and friends. What’s next? The couple’s next race is going to be the inaugural Freedom Half Marathon in Norfolk on Veterans Day weekend. Funds raised from this run benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and the Norfolk Office to End Homelessness.
“It’s about good health, good camaraderie, and good spirit. It keeps it fun and motivating.”

With the help of Bon Secours In Motion Physical Therapy and Sports Performance I have progressed from immobility to near normal function and movement in the time I spent with the therapists. The encouragement of the staff kept me working, and the professional environment gave me confidence. – Mary Jane Kilduff
I was concerned about having decreased ability to do the things what are important to me as a result of shoulder surgery on my right arm. With the therapeutic support from the therapists at In Motion I can still do all the things that are most important to me, and with less and less pain as my therapy progresses!
When it comes to the care provided by In Motion, I appreciate the philosophy of and approach to my rehab from my therapist. Healing takes time and my therapist is respectful to the body’s healing process. I also noticed that she is observant of my physical state and how my shoulder responds to weekly patterns of activity. – Sandy Hess, RN, BSN, IBCLC

Louie began with In Motion in December of 2010 in the Sports Performance Program (eventually transitioning to the Combine Training Program) at the Virginia Beach-Healthy Way location. He plays running back and corner back for Currituck High School. Louie, currently a freshman, has been playing football for seven years and also enjoys playing baseball and basketball.
His current athletic goals include learning everything about the sport of football and with his willingness to learn the sport from multiple angles, he is likely to succeed. Since beginning at In Motion, Louie has transferred from the Sports Peformance program to the new Combine Training Program-specifically designed to train young athletes to be successful at each combine component.
His In Motion trainer, Wyle Maddox-ATC, CSCS says this: “Through hard work and dedication, Louie has made outstanding improvements in his strength, speed, and agility and it will show when he performs at the National Underclassmen Combine.”
Louie is a hard worker who is determined to grow as an individual athlete for himself and to help support his team. He has a great attitude and is working hard to start in his position with his team next season. Hopefully the hard work he is putting in now will pay off one day so he can realize his ultimate goal of being involved with the National Football League.
“Training at In Motion has given me the knowledge to be a stronger, smarter athlete when it comes to working out. My trainer, Wyle, has given me the tools to grow and be more confident in my abilities,” says Louie.
Well, Louie-it is our pleasure to work with such a hard working, driven young athlete. Congratulations and good luck in all that you do!
